The ‘Faith Journey’

* * *

We have learnt that the Bible traces the development of the Hebrew idea of God and His creation and the promises made to the Patriarchs. Science tells us that this probably took very much longer than we were led to believe. So it seems that time means very little when one is speaking about ‘God’ – and His Work, and no matter how much of a mess we might make of the world and how we live in it everything will work out in accordance with God’s will … and it will always be beginning … and most would agree that ‘all change is a new becoming’.

‘The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those who live in deep shadow a light has shone’ is a scriptural expression (Isaiah 9:1) which would be as close as one could get to describing faith. Christians will sometimes talk of a ‘faith journey’ – a journey in time to a destiny to which we all look forward and in which we all hope. The importance of Authority, however, will be recognized the moment difficulties appear, that people seem to have in following the signs along the route.

If it is possible to make mistakes in our dealings with one another whom we can see, then it is easy enough to be mistaken when trying to see the path that the unseen God has laid out for us. A recognizable authority must be on hand to clear up any difficulties that arise. So far, the Catholic Church is the only organization – notwithstanding the mistakes of the past and present – that claims to be ‘It’. Catholics believe in God … they also believe in the Catholic Church. This was written into that list of tenets mentioned earlier and nothing of such a nature seems to have happened in the interim as to require this tenet to be altered.
